What can I expect from Thailand?

Thailand is a popular tourist destination in Southeast Asia. It is known for its beautiful beaches, lush jungles, vibrant culture, and delicious cuisine. The country is home to ancient temples and archaeological sites, as well as national parks and wildlife reserves. Thailand is also a great destination for adventure activities such as rock climbing, kayaking, and white-water rafting.

Here are some things you can expect:

Beautiful beaches: Thailand is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and stunning islands. Popular destinations include Phuket, Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, and Krabi.

Delicious food: Thai cuisine is famous all around the world, and you can expect to enjoy a variety of tasty dishes during your travels. From spicy curries to savory soups, there’s something for everyone.

Typical Costs When Travelling Thailand

The cost of traveling in Thailand can vary greatly depending on your travel style, itinerary, and preferences. However, here are some typical costs to give you an idea of what to expect:

Accommodation: You can find budget hostels and guesthouses for as little as ฿150-฿300 per night ($5-$10 USD), while mid-range hotels and resorts can cost around ฿1,000-฿2,000 per night ($30-$60 USD). Luxury hotels and resorts can range from ฿3,000-฿10,000 ($90-$300 USD) per night.

Food: Thai street food is delicious and affordable, with dishes starting at around ฿20-฿50 ($0.60-$1.50 USD) per meal. Mid-range restaurants can cost around ฿100-฿300 ($3-$10 USD) per meal, while high-end restaurants can range from ฿500-฿1,500 ($15-$50 USD) per meal.

Transportation: Tuk-tuks and taxis are common forms of transportation in Thailand, and can cost anywhere from ฿50-฿500 ($1.50-$15 USD) depending on the distance and bargaining skills. Songthaews (shared taxis) and buses are cheaper options, with fares starting at around ฿10-฿20 ($0.30-$0.60 USD) per ride.

Activities: Prices for activities and attractions in Thailand can vary greatly. For example, visiting a temple may only cost a small entrance fee, while activities like scuba diving or trekking can be more expensive, ranging from ฿1,000-฿5,000 ($30-$150 USD) per person.

Overall, a budget traveler can expect to spend around ฿1,000-฿1,500 ($30-$45 USD) per day on average, while mid-range travelers can expect to spend around ฿2,000-฿3,000 ($60-$90 USD) per day. Luxury travelers can expect to spend upwards of ฿5,000 ($150 USD) per day.

It’s worth noting that prices can vary greatly depending on the season, with peak season (November to February) being more expensive than low season (June to September). Additionally, prices can be higher in popular tourist areas like Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai.

In my case, I travelled to Thailand from Hong Kong with my wife and overall expense for two of us for 9 days was ($2322 USD) / ฿80,000 Thai Baht.

Using the budget tips below, you can always lower this number. However, if you stay in fancier accommodation or eat out more often, expect this to be higher!)

 

Money Saving Tips

Use local transportation Taxis and tuk-tuks in Thailand can be expensive, especially in tourist areas. Instead, opt for local transportation like buses, songthaews (shared taxis), and trains. They are much cheaper and will save you a lot of money over time. Or you can rent a scooter for much more easier experince.

Eat street food Thai street food is cheap, delicious, and a great way to experience the local cuisine. You can find it everywhere in Thailand, and it's often much cheaper than eating at a restaurant.

Shop at local markets Shopping at local markets can save you money compared to shopping at touristy malls or shops. You can find a variety of goods at markets, from clothing and souvenirs to fresh produce and snacks.

Stay in budget accommodation Thailand has plenty of budget guesthouses and hostels that are comfortable, clean, and affordable. Staying in budget accommodation can save you a lot of money compared to staying at a luxury hotel or resort.
